Oxford-based startup eliminates microplastics from diapers

Disposable diapers use synthetic absorbent materials that stay in soil and water as microplastics. Oxford-based A&B Smart Materials, founded by Amaury van Trappen and Dr Benjamin White, is building plant-based absorbents from cellulose and starch. With €1.7 million in pre-seed support, the startup aims to replace petroleum-based materials without affecting diaper performance at scale.
