The 2020 lockdown prompted engineer couple Poonam Sharma and Naveen Patwal to diversify beyond button mushroom farming into shiitake, cordyceps, lion's mane, and other exotic varieties. In a first for India, they have also commercially grown rare and wild gucchi mushrooms indoors in Uttarakhand. They now earn ₹15 crore annually through wholesale and retail sales.
